Academic Leave of Absence • Return to School (휴.복학)
Students can apply for take a leave of absence when they want to take time off temporarily or apply for returning to school as the approved leave of absence duration expires
Application for Leave of Absence (휴학신청)
- Students can apply for 2 semesters (1 year) at a time, and they can apply up to 4 times (4 years) including extension of leave of absence.

Application for Returning to School (복학신청)
- Students whose leave of absence period has ended should apply for returning to school within the deadline, and if they
do not return, they will be dis-enrolled.

Application for return to school
※ It is recommended to apply for returning to school before opening the Registration Cart, as tuition payment and course
registration are possible after the registration status has been changed to enrolled after applying for returning to school.
※ Extension of leave of absence: Students can apply for an extension while on a leave of absence, and they can apply
online before the start of the semester (1st semester: July-August, 2nd semester: January-February). (Students can apply
for an extension only once while attending school)
※ When returning to school, international students should complete visa issuance and alien registration again.
Q. Is it possible to return to school early before the end of the leave period? |
A. Yes. Early return to school is possible before the end of the leave of absence period. Students whose leave of absence period has ended should apply for returning to school within the deadline, and if they do not return, they will be dis-enrolled. |
Dis-enrollment - Withdrawal(자퇴)
If you wish to withdraw from study at SNU, you must immediately contact SNU OIA to discuss the next procedure. BUFS OIA is bound to claim the start and termination of your study to the immigration office, where we need the date of your departure from Korea. If you are residing in dormitory in BUFS, you must also make sure to complete the move-out procedure, complying with your Dormitory office’s guidance.
1. If a student has a reason that meets the dis-enrollment requirements, he/she will be dis-enrolled.
- Non-registration dis-enrollment: In case of failure to register within the prescribed period of each semester
- Non-returning dis-enrollment: In case of failure to return to school in the prescribed semester of returned to the school
Dis-enrollment procedure
※ If a student want to get tuition refund, he/she should submit a copy of bank account in the name of a parent or a legal guardian and Family Relation Certificate to the Academic Administration Service Team.

Study Period Change (학기 변동)
If you wish to extend or shorten your study period at BUFS, contact BUFS OIA to discuss it. For any change in the study period, both home university and BUFS must approve it and not all request will be accepted. When the extension request is approved, you will be guided to extend your sojourn period at the immigration office.
Major (전공)
There are many ways to majoring: single major, double major, minor major, Micro major. Depending on the chosen major, the required credits for each section may vary. Therefore, please refer to the curriculum table by entrance year for specific details.
Double Major (복수전공)
A system in which a student takes two or more majors while enrolled and two or more bachelor's degrees are acquired when required credits for each major are gotten.
- Period: Available from the first semester of the 2nd year, before the application period for the Registration Cart

Minor (부전공)
Minor (부전공) is a system whereby a student can get the tile of ‘minor’ when obtaining required credits for a course in other majors
in addition to one’s own major
Micro Major(마이크로 전공) (Applicable only to the class of 2022)
Micro Major is a system of taking prescribed subjects of a small-scale course to meet the demand of the future society
- A student is required to get 66 credits or more in Major Course, and 9 credits or more in Micro Major.
Change of Division (Department) (전과)
Application for Change of Division (Department) (전과신청방법)
- Students can change division (department) “up to 2 times” once enrolled. They can apply for the change from the 1st semester of the 2nd year to the 1st semester of the 4th year.
- Application period: Every January and early July (refer to the detailed schedule on the academic bulletin board)
- How to apply: Fill out the Division (Department) change application form → Visit the original department office/ Get signature of the head of department → Visit the International Student Support Team and submit the form.
※ Major credits completed in the previous division (department) will be recognized as credits from General Elective Field.
※ If you apply for your previous major as a minor/double major, the credits will be recognized for your minor/double major. (However, you must apply for a change in the course classification through the Student Portal System)

1. Course registration process

- Students register directly on the course registration website (http://sugang.bufs.ac.kr)
- When registering for courses, you must check in advance the course registration notices provided every semester and whether you have completed the required courses.

Registration Cart System
- Students can add subjects they want up to 30 credits to the registration cart in advance before the registering period. (The subjects in your registration cart don’t guarantee the successful registration. So you are advised to click the register button in actual course registration. Actual course registration is closed on a first-come-first-served basis according to the course enrollment quota.)
- Students need to separately register for preferred subjects and prerequisites in the registration cart system. Add prerequisite subjects first within the available credits, and then add preferred for the remaining credits.
- Students can register without searching for the courses on the subject list during course registration period, and the preferred subjects will be displayed at the top.
◆ Cancellation-Application delay system
- Subjects under [cancellation-application delay system] can be registered separately from 15:30 to 16:00.
- “Only registration” is available on a first-come-first-served basis for vacancies and cannot be canceled.
◆ Course registration credits
-Students can register up to 19 credits, and they should earn at least 15 credits to be eligible for a scholarship (9 credits for the 4th year).
◆ Retaken courses
- From the class of 2019, credits are limited to up to 6 credits per semester, up to total 24 credits until graduation.
- Courses with a grade of C+ or lower can be retaken, and the grade for a retaken course cannot exceed an A.
- Please note that you must click the [retake] button in the course registration, and the previous grade will be canceled when you retake the course.
◆ Course cancellation
- Period: Students can cancel their registration within 1/4 period of the semester, and additional registration is not allowed after cancellation.
- How to cancel: Cancel directly on the [course registration website (http://sugang.bufs.ac.kr) → Registration Cart/Course Registration details]
Q. I couldn't register for a subject I want because it exceeded the quota. Can I register for the subject with the professor's permission? |
A. No. Since the quota for course registration is set in consideration of factors such as class capacity and subject characteristics, you cannot register beyond the quota. In addition, students directly handle the course registration within the designated period, and professors or staff do not have the authority to register on behalf of the student. ※ If it is the matter of graduation certification, students are advised to consult it with the academic support team through the staff in charge of the Office of International Affairs. |
Q. How do I register for a change in a course classification? |
A. You can register directly from [NOMAD Talent System (https://eport.bufs.ac.kr) > Academic Information > Registration for courses > Registration for changing course classification change]. Results can be checked on the [NOMAD Talent System] in April and October every semester. ※ Even if the course classification is marked as Major or Advanced Major Practice at the time of course registration, students in other majors will not get credits towards their Major. So students are advised to verify each course they apply for fits the requirements of their own major. For example, double check that each course applied for fits in to the “elective”, “Major”, “of your own Major’s needs. |
Q. If some subjects have the same title with different codes, is it considered as different subjects? |
A. No. Even if subject codes are different, they can be designated as the same subject. In that case, credits will not be recognized. ※ How to search whether some subjects are considered as identical ones: [Student Portal System > Classes > Search alternative identical subjects] |
Semester Classification
BUFS’s academic calendar consists of 1st semester (Spring) and 2nd semester (Fall). Each semester then comprises a regular semester (16 weeks) and an extra session (5 weeks), followed by summer/winter vacation.
Summer and Winter Sessions Summer and winter sessions are distinguished from regular semesters in that they are offered to students as a chance o acquired credits during vacations and are open to those who wish to take classes during these sessions.
Course Resistration Period: Summer - mid May / Winter - mid November Credit Limits: Students are allowed to take maximum 6 credits in each (summer/winter) semester.
Credit & Grade
1. Academic warning
- Students achieving a GPA of less than 1.5 each semester
- For students who received an academic warning, 3 credits of course registration will be excluded in the following semester.
- Operation of courses for students received academic warning: Students who received academic warning can register for up to 19 credits in excess of the maximum of 17 credits when registering the following subjects.

2. Class evaluation
- Class evaluationa- Grades can be viewed only if you conduct a class evaluation every semester.
- How to evaluate: Access to the Student Portal System → Grades → Enter class evaluation → Select an open course → Enter an answer → Click the Submit button after completing the answers.
※ If you need to file a grade objection, you must contact the professor in charge of the course within the Grade Check and Correction Period.
Certificate
BUFS's certificates are available in both Korean and English. Can be issued either online or offline.

Offline Request
- On the first floor of the F Building, there is a certificate issuance machine. Students can search for their information using their date of birth and student ID, and certificates can be obtained through debit or credit card payment.
- At the Academic Support Office on the first floor of the F Building, certificates can be issued in cash (KRW). (During the semester: 9 a.m. ~ 5 p.m. / During Vacation time: 10 a.m. ~ 4 p.m., *excluding lunchtime from 12 p.m. ~ 1 p.m.)
Graduation requirements
Students can review their graduation requirements based on the Standard Curriculum Guide for International Students (by entrance year). Additionally, through the NOMAD SYS, students can access their individual academic transcripts. By reviewing these transcripts each semester, students can track
the courses they have previously taken and the credits required for graduation.
